Distance Learning On The Rise

According to a new report from International Data Corp. (IDC), "Online Distance Learning in Higher Education, 1998 -- 2002," distance learning will become a "viable option to traditional teaching methods," and is "poised for major growth over the next several years."

IDC says the number of college students enrolled in distance learning courses will go up from 710,000 in 1998 to 2.2 million in 2002.

Not only that, but the number of higher education institutions offering distance learning programs will rise along with the number of students. By 2002, says IDC, 85 percent of two-year colleges will be offering distance learning courses, up from 58 percent in 1998.

In addition, the number of four-year colleges that will be offering distance learning courses will go up from 62 percent in 1998 to 84 percent of 2002.

The Internet takes credit for much of the growth, with students no longer having to depend on videotapes and closed circuit TV for their lessons and coursework.

As a result, IDC says "enormous opportunities" will present themselves to software developers, telecommunications companies, hardware makers, publishers, and Internet and Web service providers.
